Center for Environmental Health Cracks Down on Mint-Flavored Products with Pulegone

Independent Testing Found the Minty Additive Causes Cancer in Lab Animals

Today, the nonprofit watchdog Center for Environmental Health (CEH) served Ghirardelli and Trader Joe’s with notices of violation over the pulegone found in Ghirardelli Mint Squares and Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Mint Creams. Products with pulegone sold in California are known to cause cancer. Pulegone is listed as a known carcinogen under Proposition 65 in California.

Last year, CEH also sent notices to The Hershey Company, Perfetti Van Melle, E-Alternative Solutions, and FÜM for pulegone found in mint-flavored products, including York Peppermint Patties and Trident Gum.

In addition to the notices, CEH has launched a #SoLongPulegone online advocacy campaign urging The Hershey Company to make a safer York Peppermint Patty.
