Are Toxic Chemicals Lurking In Your St. Patrick’s Day Meal?
When you sit down to enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day meal of corned beef and cabbage, the last thing you should have to think about is, “Am I feeding a toxic chemical to my family?”
We hope that by next St. Patrick’s Day, this won’t have to be a question that crosses your mind. But right now, it should be.
Today, we sent legal notices to 8 brands of canned corned beef after our testing found high levels of the toxic chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) in these products. BPA is a well-studied endocrine-disrupting chemical known to cause developmental and reproductive harm and is linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, metabolic disorders, diabetes, and numerous other serious health concerns.
BPA in canned foods is unfortunately not a new story. Our 2017 study revealed that while just under 40% of cans from mainstream grocers contained BPA, more than 90% (71 of 78) of cans purchased from ethnic grocery stores contain the dangerous chemical.
We sent legal notices to the following brands for violating California’s consumer health and safety law:
- Crown Brand
- Kroger
- Libby’s
- Martin Purefoods
- Ox & Palm
- San Miguel Pure Foods
- Targeter
- Ziyad
CEH urges these brands to reformulate their products to ensure that canned food products are safe for consumption. We wish you a healthy, safe, and happy St. Patrick’s Day!
