Extra Speed from Ski Wax May Come at a Cost

It’s the first official day of the winter, and many folks are ready to hit the ski slopes.  After the huge amount of fresh snow that has dropped from early snow storms in Northern California, what skier wouldn’t want to head out for the mountains?

But many professional and non-professional skiers are unknowingly exposing themselves to toxic chemicals as they prepare their skis for their first runs of the season.  New scientific research suggests that the coat of hot wax that skiers infuse onto the bottom of their skis has been found to contain perfluorochemicals (PFCs) that can build up in the bodies of those who use the wax, carrying potentially serious health risks, including cardiovascular disease, liver damage, hormone disruption and cancer.
