This Fourth of July: Claim Your Independence from Toxics!
Before you head off to your 4th of July barbeque this year, take a moment to think about the complexity of the freedom of choice we have as consumers. Most supermarkets and stores we shop at carry thousands of brands, thousands of choices of food, products, and more that we get to choose between. Those choices are great, but one very important freedom that’s missing is the freedom to know what’s inside the products we buy.
Synthetic chemicals plague most of the store-bought products on the market today. Those chemicals are usually untested and are often linked to negative health effects. Canned foods and plastic children’s toys contain Bisphenol-A, a chemical linked to breast cancer and a host of other health concerns. Couches and nursing pillows contain toxic flame retardants, chemicals that have been linked to cancer, infertility, and hormone-disruption. The list goes on.
But this shouldn’t get us down—this should be our motivation to reclaim our freedom as consumers, and push it to the next level! We can reclaim our independence from toxic chemicals by consuming less, purchasing conscientiously, and taking action to support safe chemicals!
Below is our roundup of helpful tips and action opportunities to claim your independence from toxics!
- BBQ-ing this summer? Avoid toxics in your food and containers by following our tips for a healthy and safe 4th of July celebration!
- Take Action! Get toxic flame retardants out of your furniture, baby products, and more by sending a message to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Let them know we want toxic-free fire safety!
- Be an upstanding American citizen: Support the Safe Chemicals Act, a law that would protect our health by putting commonsense limits on all toxic chemicals!
Have a happy and healthy holiday!
